Welcome!

Hey new comers! Welcome! So here is how this will work: if you have a blogger account, great! If you don't, you should make one. Once you do, you can follow this blog, and you'll be able to comment on anything that is posted. Every week, a new idea will be posted by one of the members. This can be any idea; a character or environment, a prop or design, and anything in between. This idea will be posted every Sunday. After it is posted, every member will get to creating! Any medium you want as long as you can upload a pic of it. You will have a week to create your design. As the admin, only I can post pictures, so everyone will have to email (rhpuckett88@gmail.com) their pics to me, and I'll post them on Saturdays, after which everyone can comment, like, and talk about each others work. Then that Sunday, someone will post a new idea and we'll start again. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or just post on the blog. Looking forward to some great collaborations with everybody! Lets be epic and make some art!

First Challenge!

Alright everybody, here is the first challenge! If you've been following the news much, you'll know that Michael Bay is directing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. The twist is that, in his story, the turtles are aliens from another world. Your challenge is to redesign the turtles as an alien species. You can do all four or just one. Have fun and looking forward to your emails at the end of the week!

This one comes from myself, Ryan. My idea was that the turtles are all refugees from a destroyed solar system (possibly destroyed by Shredder some how, eh? eh?) They were all from different planets though with different atmospheres. Raph comes from a deserty rock planet, hence the bulky look.

From Chris Dobbs, a cybernetic Chelonia; Robo Leonardo. He wanted to make that his "alien" ninja turtle looked more aline than turtle. So this version of Leonardo has a robotic suit with sword that retract from the wrists and has a more extraterrestrial feel to him while keeping the attributes of a turtle, like the shell on his back. He was inspired by the aliens in the movie Independence Day (which he watched the night before) and the Protoss from Starcraft when developing this design.

  1. Chris I think the mood behind this piece is awesome! I like the dark palette and shadows. I think you have a cool pose going too. Your idea is solid and you definitely get the feeling of turtle and alien. The glowing eyes are great, and I love the subtle panels on the shell, as well as the tubing. Your color transitions are really smooth too. My critique would be that the head overlapping the shell like that doesn't look right. Anatomically it should be the other way around. Also, with all the great detail you have going in the arms and upper body, the legs feel a little underdeveloped. They just kinda look like some circles thrown together. Great job overall bud

  2. Puckett: I like the idea, and how the turtle's body fits with the planet he is from. I also love the anatomy. He looks like a steroid muscle builder.

Chris: Great concept on robotic turtles. I just wish the lighting wasn't so dark (which I understand it sets the mood), because I would like to see the body more clearly. I also think the turtle could do without the thick black outlines. Otherwise, good job.

  3. Thanks for the crits! I agree with all the things you have said. Good things to remember for next time!

Ryan your turtle is pretty sweet. I'm digging the details and how it has that sort of cool Cel Shaded look. I'm a fan of Cel Shaded. My only thing is the black outlines in some areas and not others. I'd almost like to see it without the black lines because I look at that chest area and that just looks awesome. I think if you substituted the black for a darker brown or with some of the colors you have already there it would give it a little extra boost. But stylistically its amazing. Let's just see what Michael Bay's Raphael looks like now....
